All requirements are current as of the publication of this document. Please confirm the specific requirements with your West km project manager before software installation.

West km Server Configuration

Per the software agreement, only a single instance (single-server installation) of West km is supported.

The West km server should not be shared with other applications or services. A new or existing/repurposed file server can be used for West km Express, as long as no other applications or database software is installed and running (e.g., e-mail, case or document management, or other database software). Multi-server configurations are not supported.

Hardware

Processor: Dual CPU 2 GHz or faster
Memory: 4 GB or more
Operating System

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 (32-bit) or Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit) with the following components:

Internet Information Services (IIS)
Java Runtime Environment 1.5
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Windows Installer 4.5—needed with SQL Server Express only
Windows PowerShell 1.0—needed with SQL Server Express only

Notes:

  • West km runs as a 32-bit application on 64-bit systems.
  • Software will be provided for you to install Java Runtime Environment, Microsoft .NET Framework, Windows Installer, and Windows PowerShell along with West km.

Database Management

  • Microsoft SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Edition 2005 SP3 or SP2;
  • Microsoft SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Edition 2008 (32-bit or 64-bit); or
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express (32-bit or 64-bit)—installs with West km.

Notes:

  • The SQL Server system must be installed locally on the West km server. Only a single instance (single-server installation) of West km is supported.
  • If Microsoft SQL Server is not detected during installation, West km will install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.
  • If SQL Server Express is already installed, you must configure TCP/IP to accept remote connections and to use a static port.
  • SQL Server Express includes a 10 GB maximum database size (data files but not log file are counted). For the best performance when using West km Express with SQL Server Express, limit the document population to 20,000.
  • For the best performance when using West km Express with SQL Server Standard or Enterprise, limit the document population to 250,000.
  • Documents you delete from West km leave a small imprint in the database.

Browser with Internet Access
  Internet Explorer 6.0, 7.0, or 8.0 (32-bit versions only)
Client for Document Management System
If documents are housed in eDOCS DM, the DMS client installed with a user account that has access to the documents to be indexed in West km.
Firewall and Proxy Exceptions

Your West km server must allow HTTP and port 80 access for outbound TCP communications through your firewall. If you have a proxy server and utilize authentication, the West km server should be listed as an exception so it bypasses the proxy server. Proxy authentication is not supported.

Statement of Compatibility for Virtual Environments

Support is provided for West km running on a virtual environment (e.g., VMware) without initially requiring reproduction of West km issues on native hardware. The virtual machines must meet minimum requirements.

If your West km technical consultant suspects that the virtualization layer is the root cause of an issue, you may be required to contact the appropriate support provider for your virtual environment to resolve the issue.

West km functional issues are rare under virtual environments, but performance and capacity issues are more common. Performance issues that deviate from internal benchmarks will require you to disable other systems that are competing for physical system resources and may possibly require you to remove West km from the virtual environment altogether.

Disk Space Calculations

  • Number of work product documents (in native format) to be indexed = D
  • Average size of document = S
  • Total size of documents to be indexed = T = D * S
  • Approximate disk space required on the West km server = T * 2.5

Example:
Your organization has 100,000 work product documents, averaging 60 KB per document.

  • D = 100,000
  • S = 60 KB
  • T = 100,000 * 60 KB = 6 GB

Disk space required on the West km server = 6 GB * 2.5 = 15 GB

Calculations should also take into account these considerations:

  • Growth: the number of years in the server cycle and the approximate number of new documents being added to West km per year.
  • Backup/recovery: the ability to perform backup and recover procedures on a server within a specified period of time.
