Display Settings for Field Names

To customize field labels and set the type of search control for fields on the Fields panel in the West km interface,

  1. On the System Options page, click Field Display Settings.
  2. In the Field Label column, type the labels to use throughout West km whenever the corresponding field is used in the product interface. Labels of 10–15 characters are recommended for the best display, but more characters are allowed. The following characters are not allowed: " (quotation mark), ' (apostrophe), ; (semicolon), < (less than), > (greater than), & (ampersand).

Note: Labels must be unique. In addition, the label for the Library Group field must not duplicate the name of any Limits restrictions (e.g., Document Type) or searches will produce an error.

  3. In the Search Control column on the Field Names page, select the type of search control that you want to be displayed for the corresponding field on the Fields panel in the West km interface.

    • Textbox: Search criteria can be typed in a text box. Terms from the documents or issues the user is researching, as well as connectors that specify the relationship between those terms, can be entered.
    • Dropdown: One option can be chosen from a drop-down list. The options are unique values generated from the metadata about your West km documents. (This option is not recommended for fields having more than 100 unique values.)
    • Lookup: Up to ten options can be selected from a look-up dialog box. The options are unique values generated from metadata about your West km documents.

Note: The selected search controls do not display in the Westlaw interface.

  4. Click Save.
This setting applies to West km for Litigation and West km for Transactions. Changes take effect immediately.
