Manually Launching Full-Text Indexing Processes
This topic explains how to manually launch full-text indexing processes. To learn more about full-text indexing, indexing collections, and scheduling, see Scheduling Full-Text Indexing.
When you use the manual method to launch a full-text indexing process, processing is unlike the regularly scheduled windows in that
- you can specify which full-text indexing collections to process. (Via the regularly scheduled windows, processing occurs for all indexing collections.)
- processing occurs for all documents in the indexing collection. (Via the regularly scheduled windows, processing occurs only for new, modified, and deleted documents.)
- you can launch a specific full-text indexing process for an indexing collection.
To manually launch a full-text indexing process,
- Click Setup.
- Click the HTML Storage tab.
- In the left frame, click Collections.
-
For the indexing collection you want to process, select the full-text indexing process you want (e.g., Reindex All Content) from the Actions list and click Start.
- Reindex All Content: This process runs full-text indexing for all documents in the indexing collection. If the full-text indexing window is not open, processing starts once the window opens.
Reindex Failed Content: This process attempts to reprocess documents that failed full-text indexing in the indexing collection. If the full-text indexing window is not open, processing starts once the window opens.
Note: The search component will automatically attempt reprocessing of failed documents. The Reindex Failed Content process could be useful, for example, if the search component was down and you want to manually launch reprocessing attempts.

Clear Indexed Data: Do not run this process without the assistance of a West km representative. This process deletes all search component index files and document content from the search component databases. It should be used only in certain troubleshooting situations. Processing occurs immediately. After running this process, you must run Reindex All Content or searches will fail to find content.
Note: When you clear indexed data, note that content remains in the HTML document stores, and documents records are placed in suspended status.
Update Collection Definition: This process updates the indexing collection's XML files, which contain high-level and field metadata for the indexing collection. It is used for troubleshooting purposes, but will have no ill effect if used at other times. Processing occurs immediately.
Changes are applied to newly indexed content. To apply changes to all content, run Reindex All Content.
To view or edit XML field metadata for an indexing collection, in the Metadata column of the Collections table, click View/Edit next to the indexing collection. Make the changes you want in the Edit Metadata dialog box and click Save. This action is comparable to the Update Collection Definition process.
Changes are applied to newly indexed content. To apply changes to all content, run Reindex All Content.
