Running Vetting Rules
When vetting rules are run, the vetting database is updated. You can set vetting rules to run on a schedule or you can run them manually.
There are two types of vetting processes:
- Bulk Vetting: Vetting rules run for all documents in your source collection. Bulk vetting adds information about new documents, updates information about existing documents, and removes information about deleted documents and documents no longer part of the vetted collection. Bulk vetting also adds information about new documents that result from adding, modifying, or deleting a rule.
- Incremental Vetting: Vetting rules run for documents in your source collection that are new or changed since vetting last occurred. Incremental vetting adds information about new documents and updates information about changed documents. (Incremental vetting does not remove document records and does not add information about new documents as a result of adding, modifying, or deleting a rule.)
The following table summarizes the differences between bulk and incremental vetting:
|
Factor |
Bulk Vetting |
Incremental Vetting |
|
Document/Date |
Runs rules against all documents regardless of their date |
Runs rules against documents that are new or changed since the last successful vetting process (bulk or incremental) |
|
Deletion |
Deletes document information if documents
|
No document information is deleted |
|
Rules |
Adds new document information as a result of a new, modified, or deleted rule |
Does not add new document information as a result of a new, modified, or deleted rule |
Important: If you add, modify, or delete a vetting rule, bulk vetting (not incremental vetting) must run for the changes to take effect.
Vetting runs as follows:
Vetting is run by rule group (i.e., by collection). Inclusionary rules are processed first, followed by exclusionary rules. If global exclusionary rules are applied, they are run after the group’s specific inclusionary and exclusionary rules. For more information, see this Vetting Rules Example.
- For both manual and scheduled launches, vetting runs only within the time window defined for the vetting window on the Indexing Server Setup page on the Setup tab. By default, a 24-hour vetting window is defined. If vetting is not completed at the close of the vetting window, vetting stops within 10-15 minutes and then continues when the vetting window re-opens.
You can run vetting rules in a particular DMS database. For details, see Viewing Vetting Statistics.
- Vetting can run while end users are accessing the West km interface.
- If bulk vetting and incremental vetting are scheduled to run on the same day for a rule group, only the bulk vetting process will run.

Manually Running Vetting for a Rule Group
You can manually run the vetting rules for a rule group. In the Saved Rule Groups table on the Administer Rule Groups page, click either Run Bulk or Run Incremental for the rule group whose rules you want to run. When you confirm the request, vetting begins in accordance with the vetting windows (the time and type of vetting process) that are set up for the rule group on the Indexing Server Setup page.
Manually Running Vetting for Multiple Rule Groups
You can manually run the vetting rules for all rule groups affiliated with a selected DMS. On the Administer Rule Groups page, select your DMS from the DMS Type drop-down list. Then click Run All Bulk or Run All Incremental. When you confirm the request, vetting begins in accordance with the vetting windows (the time and type of vetting process) that are set up for the rule group on the Indexing Server Setup page.
Scheduling Vetting for a Rule Group
To set a schedule to automatically run the vetting rules for a rule group, define a vetting scheduling window on the Indexing Server Setup page. When both a vetting scheduling window and a vetting window for the rule group are open, rule groups will be scheduled for vetting. To create separate schedules for different sets of rule groups and different vetting processes, define multiple vetting windows. For example, you might schedule bulk vetting weekly and incremental vetting daily. For details, see Setting Up the Indexing Server (Adding Indexing Service Windows).
When you set up automatic vetting, it is recommended that you set the vetting scheduling window to a 24-hour open window (e.g., 12:00:00:00 AM–12:00:00:00 AM) and the vetting windows outside regular business hours.
